Intel was founded in 1968 by two American engineers, Robert Noyce and Gorden Moore. The funding came through venture capitalist Arthur Rock who contributed $10,000 and the founders raised an additional $2.5 million of funding by selling convertible debentures. Intel started off with manufacturing memory chips and was known for manufacturing the world’s first Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOS). Intel developed its first microprocessor chip in 1971 and named it 4004. In the following years, Intel’s subsequent line of microprocessors found their way into hundreds of electronic devices like traffic signals and cash registers. In 1981, IBM selected Intel’s 8088 microprocessor to power its personal computers. As the PC industry took off in the early 80s, Intel touched $1 billion in annual revenues in 1983.
